A major problem that has existed in most underdeveloped countries is the violation of human rights. Human rights are privileges that each human should have no matter who that person is or where they are from. Human rights violations can be found globally and locally. Such human rights violations occur most commonly in third world or developing countries. However, human rights violations occur in developed nations such as China.

Human rights can be violated in many different ways. Religious persecution is a major problem in diverse countries, such as India. It also occurs when a large, dominant country such as China obtains control over a smaller, less developed nation like Tibet. Women's rights are also often violated on a global scale. In recent decades, women have been given more freedom and rights, but in unstable countries, they can be easily taken away. Oppressive governments, such as the one established by the Taliban militia group in Afghanistan, are able to find excuses to treat women unjustly. Ethnic conflicts like in Kosovo can also lead to the violating of human rights. Children are perhaps the most susceptible to abuses of human rights. In Southeast Asia, children are forced to work under harsh conditions for little or no pay.

Different conditions lead to violations of human rights. Since the Chinese takeover of the region of Tibet, the Tibetan people, especially monks, have been tortured or killed by the Chinese government. China is officially atheist and the government takes steps to maintain control over religious activities. The government views the practicing of religion as a sign of dissent. In the process of doing so, it violates human rights such as freedom of assembly, speech and the expression as well as freedom of religion. China primarily has targeted the rapidly growing Buddhist population, but it also punishes Catholics and Protestants.
